What it is

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin procedure that uses very fine needles to create controlled microscopic punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the natural healing response and encourage production of collagen. It is therefore also known as collagen induction therapy.

Dermatologists use microneedling for concerns including acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged-looking pores, uneven texture and selected pigmentation concerns.

02

What can Microneedling address?

Microneedling can be considered for several texture and collagen-related concerns after appropriate skin assessment.

Controlled microneedling can stimulate new collagen and help make selected depressed acne scars less noticeable.

Collagen stimulation may gradually soften the appearance of selected fine lines and early wrinkles.

Microneedling may help improve overall texture and reduce the visible appearance of enlarged pores in selected patients.

Controlled collagen remodeling can help selected rough or irregular areas appear smoother over time.

Microneedling is also used for selected concerns involving dark spots, uneven tone and melasma, depending on the overall treatment plan.

Fine lines and mild age-related skin-quality changes may improve through gradual collagen induction.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some skin conditions should be reviewed before Microneedling.

Active inflammatory acne or skin infection

Active herpes or recurrent cold sores

Significant irritation or impaired skin healing

History of unwanted pigmentation or abnormal scarring

Recent aesthetic treatments that may affect healing

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your skin, medical history and treatment goals before deciding whether Microneedling is appropriate.

03

What to expect

Skin & texture assessment

Scar type, pore visibility, fine lines, pigmentation and overall skin quality are evaluated before treatment depth is selected.

Controlled microneedling

A professional microneedling device creates controlled microscopic channels across selected treatment areas to stimulate the skin’s repair response and collagen production.

Healing & collagen remodeling

Temporary redness or sensitivity may occur initially. Improvement develops gradually as the skin heals and new collagen forms.

Physician note

Effective Microneedling is about controlled depth—not simply creating more skin injury.

Acne scars, fine lines and uneven texture may require different treatment depths and strategies. Appropriate patient selection and controlled technique help balance improvement with safe healing.

Questions

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to create controlled microscopic punctures in the skin and stimulate collagen production.

It is used for selected concerns including acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged-looking pores, uneven texture, dark spots and stretch marks.

Yes. Microneedling stimulates new collagen and can help reduce the appearance of selected acne scars.

Yes. Collagen induction can make selected fine lines and wrinkles less noticeable over time.

AAD states that Microneedling can be performed across skin tones. Individual assessment is still important, especially when there is a history of pigmentation changes or other skin conditions.

There is no universal number. Treatment frequency depends on your concern, its severity and how your skin responds. Acne scars, for example, may need repeated treatments as collagen remodeling progresses.

Temporary redness, tightness, itching, peeling, sensitivity, bruising or pinpoint bleeding can occur and typically settle as the skin heals.

Possible risks include temporary skin irritation, pigment changes, infection and reactivation of cold sores.

No. Standard Microneedling creates controlled mechanical micro-injuries, while RF Microneedling also delivers radiofrequency energy into the tissue. They should be treated as separate procedures. In 2025, the FDA issued a safety communication regarding reports of serious complications with certain uses of RF Microneedling, including burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve damage.

Needling depth, treatment frequency and recovery depend on your skin concern and individual assessment.

PERSONALISED COLLAGEN INDUCTION

Better Microneedling starts with the right depth.

A shallow texture concern and a deeper acne scar do not require identical treatment. The skin area, scar depth, pigmentation tendency and treatment goal all influence how Microneedling should be planned.

At Averah, treatment focuses on your skin texture, scar pattern, skin tone and collagen needs before deciding the appropriate needling approach.
