01

What it is

Laser toning is a low-fluence laser technique commonly performed with a Q-switched 1064 nm Nd laser for selected pigmentary concerns. It delivers repeated controlled laser pulses at relatively low energy to target excess pigment while limiting unnecessary thermal injury.

Laser toning has been studied particularly for melasma and other acquired pigmentary concerns, but results vary and repeated treatment must be planned carefully.

02

What can laser toning address?

Laser toning may be considered for selected pigmentation concerns after dermatologist assessment.

Selected areas of irregular pigmentation may be treated to create a more even-looking complexion.

Diffuse or localised facial pigmentation may be evaluated for low-fluence laser treatment.

Selected post-inflammatory pigmentation following acne may be considered after active breakouts are controlled.

Some pigmentary marks that remain despite appropriate skincare may be assessed for laser treatment.

Laser toning may sometimes be added to a broader melasma plan, but it should not automatically replace sun protection and medical treatment.

When different forms of pigmentation coexist, laser toning may form one part of a personalised combination treatment plan.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some factors require careful evaluation before laser toning.

Pigmentation has not yet been correctly diagnosed

Melasma is actively worsening or frequently recurring

Recent tanning or significant sun exposure

Previous laser treatment caused pigmentation changes

Active irritation, infection or inflammation is present

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your pigmentation pattern, natural skin tone, medical history and previous treatments before recommending laser toning.

What to expect

Pigment & skin assessment

Your pigmentation pattern, skin tone and likely pigment depth are reviewed before treatment planning.

Controlled laser toning

Low-fluence laser energy is delivered across selected areas using carefully planned settings rather than aggressive high-energy treatment.

Pigment response monitoring

Skin tone, pigmentation and treatment tolerance are reviewed over repeated sessions so settings or treatment strategy can be adjusted.

04

Physician note

Laser toning should improve selected pigmentation without trying to change your natural skin colour.More sessions or higher energy do not automatically mean better results. Repeated or inappropriate laser toning can lead to rebound pigmentation or areas of unwanted lightening, so treatment needs careful monitoring.

Questions

Laser toning is a low-fluence laser technique commonly using a Q-switched Nd laser to treat selected pigmentation concerns gradually.

A 1064 nm Q-switched Nd laser is commonly described in medical literature for low-fluence laser toning.

It may help selected patients, but melasma often needs combination care. AAD notes that laser or light procedures may be added when patients are already using medical treatment and appropriate sun protection.

It can be considered for selected patients, but deeper skin tones need careful laser selection and settings because pigment-related side effects can occur.

No. The treatment should not be presented as skin whitening. Its goal is to improve selected excess pigmentation and help create a more even appearance while preserving the patient’s natural skin tone.

There is no universal number. Research on laser toning uses varying protocols, and the ideal number of sessions depends on the pigmentation, device and individual response.

Downtime is generally limited with low-fluence treatment, although temporary redness, warmth or sensitivity can occur depending on the settings and individual skin.

Yes. Melasma and other pigmentary conditions can recur, particularly when underlying triggers continue. Recurrence and rebound pigmentation have been reported after laser toning.

Yes. Reported complications include rebound hyperpigmentation and mottled or spot-like hypopigmentation, particularly when treatment is repeated excessively or performed inappropriately.

PERSONALISED LASER TONING

Even skin tone starts with understanding the pigment.

Pigmentation can arise at different depths and for different reasons. Melasma, post-acne marks and other dark patches should not automatically receive the same laser settings or treatment schedule.
