What it is
Laser pigmentation treatment uses carefully selected light energy to target certain areas of excess pigment within the skin. Laser and light-based treatments can be used for concerns such as hyperpigmentation, brown spots and sun-related pigmentation in appropriately selected patients.
Different pigmentation conditions behave differently. The treatment that may be appropriate for a discrete sun spot may not be appropriate for melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Laser treatment may be considered for selected pigment concerns after diagnosis and skin-tone assessment.
Selected flat brown spots related to cumulative sun exposure may respond to appropriate laser or light-based treatment.

What to expect
Pigmentation assessment
The colour, pattern, depth and likely cause of pigmentation are evaluated before treatment selection. For melasma, dermatologists may use tools such as dermoscopy or a Wood’s lamp to better understand pigment depth.
Personalised laser treatment
An appropriate laser or light-based approach is selected according to the pigmentation type, treatment area and skin tone rather than using one setting for every patient.
Healing & pigment monitoring
Skin response, darkening or lightening, and improvement in pigmentation are reviewed over time. Laser procedures can cause temporary redness and may also cause unwanted pigment changes, making follow-up important.

It uses selected laser or light energy to target certain areas of excess pigmentation within the skin. Laser/light therapy can be used for concerns including hyperpigmentation and sun-damaged skin.
Depending on the device and diagnosis, lasers may be considered for selected brown spots, sun spots and other hyperpigmentation concerns.
Laser or light procedures may sometimes be used as part of melasma treatment, but they are not automatically the first choice. Treatment needs to consider skin tone, pigment depth and triggers because irritation can worsen melasma.
It can be suitable for selected patients, but darker skin contains more melanin and has a greater risk of post-treatment pigmentation changes. Careful laser selection and treatment parameters are therefore important.
