01

What it is

Laser tattoo removal uses focused laser energy to break tattoo ink into smaller pigment particles, which are then gradually cleared by the body’s immune system over time.

Different tattoo colours absorb different wavelengths of light, which means the laser or settings may need to change according to the ink colours present. Dark blue and black are generally easier to treat than colours such as green, red and yellow.

What tattoos can be treated?

Laser treatment can be considered for many professional and amateur tattoos, but treatment response varies according to the ink and tattoo characteristics.

Localised tattoos can be treated precisely according to their colour, depth and location.

Different colours may require different laser wavelengths, settings or treatment strategies.

Black and dark-blue inks generally absorb laser energy more effectively and are often easier to treat.

Professionally applied tattoos often contain multiple layers of pigment and may require repeated treatments.

Amateur tattoos may also be evaluated for laser lightening or removal depending on how the pigment was placed.

Some cosmetic tattoos can be lasered, but white, skin-tone and permanent-makeup pigments may darken after treatment.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some factors should be reviewed carefully before laser tattoo removal.

History of raised or keloid scarring

Active infection, rash or irritation over the tattoo

White, flesh-coloured or permanent-makeup pigments

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Medicines or health conditions that may affect healing

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your tattoo, skin, medical history and expectations before recommending treatment.

What to expect

Tattoo & skin assessment

Tattoo colours, size, depth, location and surrounding skin are evaluated before selecting the treatment approach.

Targeted laser treatment

Laser energy is directed toward tattoo pigment to break the ink into smaller particles. Different colours may require different wavelengths or settings.

Healing & progressive fading

The skin is given time to recover between sessions while the body gradually clears fragmented ink. Temporary redness, swelling or mild blistering may occur after treatment.

04

Physician note

Tattoo removal is a gradual process—not a one-session eraser.

Ink colour, pigment depth, tattoo layering and skin response all influence how quickly a tattoo fades. The goal is controlled progressive clearance while protecting the surrounding skin.

Questions

Laser light breaks tattoo ink into small particles, which the immune system then gradually clears from the body.

Usually not. Tattoo ink is deposited in layers, and the skin also needs time to heal between treatments. Multiple sessions are typically required.

Black and dark-blue inks are generally easier to remove, while green, red and yellow can be more difficult and may require different laser wavelengths.

No. Complete removal is not always possible. The result depends on factors including tattoo colour, size, depth, location and treatment response.

Treatment can feel uncomfortable or painful. A dermatologist may use topical or injected anaesthetic to improve comfort when appropriate.

There is no single number for everyone. Most tattoos require multiple sessions, and the number depends on tattoo size, colour, depth and other factors.

Temporary redness, swelling, soreness or mild blistering can occur. Other possible risks include changes in skin colour, scarring, infection and incomplete pigment removal.

The FDA has not approved tattoo-removal creams or DIY removal kits and says there is no evidence these products can reach and remove pigment in the deeper dermis. Some may cause burns or scars.

PERSONALISED TATTOO REMOVAL

Every tattoo responds differently.

Tattoo removal depends on more than tattoo size. Ink colour, pigment depth, tattoo layering, body location and individual skin response all influence how treatment progresses.

At Averah, treatment focuses on careful assessment and progressive tattoo lightening rather than promising instant or guaranteed complete removal.
