What it is
A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops after the skin heals from an injury, piercing, surgery, acne or other trauma. Unlike a typical scar, a keloid may extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound.
Keloids can vary in size, colour and texture and may sometimes feel itchy, tender or uncomfortable. Because they can recur, treatment often requires careful assessment and follow-up.
02
What can contribute to keloids?
Keloids may develop after different types of skin injury, especially in people who are naturally more prone to excessive scar formation.
Inflamed acne lesions may sometimes heal with raised or thickened scar tissue.
Ear or body piercings can trigger keloid formation in susceptible individuals.
Keloids may develop along surgical scars, particularly in areas prone to tension.
Even small cuts or wounds can occasionally lead to excessive scar formation.
Burn injuries may heal with raised or thickened scar tissue in some individuals.
Keloid formation may occasionally develop following injections or vaccinations.
WHO IT’S NOT FOR
Certain situations may require treatment to be delayed, modified or medically reviewed first.
Active infection, open wound or significant inflammation around the scar
Pregnancy or breastfeeding when a proposed medicine or procedure may not be suitable
Recent surgery or injury that has not yet fully healed
Certain medications or medical conditions that may affect wound healing
Unrealistic expectations of complete or permanent scar removal
This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess the scar, medical history and treatment goals before recommending the most appropriate approach.
03
What to expect
Scar assessment
Your dermatologist examines the scar’s size, thickness, colour, location, symptoms and previous treatment history.
Personalised treatment planning
A suitable approach is selected based on the type of scar, its behaviour and the likelihood of recurrence.
Follow-up & monitoring
Because keloids can return, follow-up may be recommended to monitor progress and manage recurrence where needed.

CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE
Keloids are not just cosmetic scars. They are the result of an overactive healing response and can behave differently from person to person.

CLINICAL SCAR CARE
Scar treatment starts with the right diagnosis.
Not every raised scar is a keloid. Hypertrophic scars, inflamed scars and other skin growths can appear similar but may behave differently.
At Averah, we assess the scar’s structure, history and behaviour before recommending treatment. This helps create a more appropriate plan and sets realistic expectations.
The focus is not simply to “remove” a scar, but to improve its appearance, comfort and overall behaviour while managing the possibility of recurrence.
